Meet the team – Sandra Evans, Arnia co-founder – Promoting science in bee yards and schools Sandra is a qualified Plant Scientist but these days can also list; beekeeper, researcher, olive oil producer and ‘mother of four spirited children’ as other skills gained through experience. Her passion for nature, and for plants in particular goes back to childhood walks in the hills of her home country of Yugoslavia learning about the local flora. She went on to gain a First Class Honours degree in Plant Science at Durham University, followed by a Masters degree in Plant Biochemistry. Spending so much time looking at flowers, it was only a matter of time before bees caught Sandra’s attention and, as you would expect – once the basics of beekeeping had been mastered, she began to study the honey bees. Sandra, along with husband, Huw began to design equipment to assist with research into bee behaviour and so Arnia was born! Within the company, Sandra now leads the research into bee behaviour and bioacoustics, influencing the company’s R&D work and often presenting the results at conferences all over the world.   She is currently working on Arnia’s Education Programme which aims to bring bee related science into schools as a platform for cross curricular, STEM based and IoT learning. Free time for Sandra is a rare commodity but in stolen moments she takes delight in music, books, organic gardening and ethnobotany.
