A David V Goliath Battle in the Agri-tech sector.
HiveTech Ltd, who are leading providers of technology solutions to the commercial beekeeping industry and Arnia’s partners in New Zealand, have qualified for the finals of the NZ Tech awards, in the category ‘Best Hi-Tech in the Agri-Tech sector’. This follows on from their success in the recent Taranaki Chamber of Commerce Business Awards where they won the Innovation Excellence award.
HiveTech’s products enable beekeepers to know where their hives are and what the hive is doing by monitoring location, rainfall, temperature and weight. When the honey boxes are sent to the processing factory a full history of the hive that produced this honey can be read automatically from RFID tags attached to the honey boxes. This provides the honey industry with true pot to hive traceability, a key requirement of NZ export partners such as China and Europe. Given the economic value of honey, particularly Manuka Honey, it is vital producers know the whereabouts of their every drop. HiveTech guarantees that assurance.
Product manager, Iain Malloy, said “It’s a great honour for HiveTech to be recognized by the NZ Tech community as an organization pushing the boundaries of what can be achieved in true, total food traceability.”
HiveTech is competing against one of the giants of the NZ Agri-Tech sector, Hamilton based Gallagher Innovations. Malloy commented “This could be a battle of David and Goliath proportions. With our start-up company HiveTech going up against a 75yr old business with a $300 million turnover, the odds are against us – but we like the fact that in the age old story, the little guy won.”
